Watcha Pond Main House
Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

This home and its nearby guest house are nestled within a grove of wind-blown oak trees between Watcha Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. The building’s shifting plan creates veiled views of the pond from the ground floor living spaces and ocean views from the second floor. The upper deck wraps the back of the house, giving the bedrooms direct access to the exterior and views beyond.

A larger, public deck at the second-floor balcony overlooks the double-height dining and living room. A free-standing garage forms an entry court with the main house, while the guest house is revealed only subtly from the court through the oak trees.

Zoning required the roofs to be sloped. To satisfy these requirements while still opening the interior to the site and views, the roof planes slope toward the center of the houses before rising sculpturally toward the exterior. Central valleys in the roofs capture rainwater and dramatically release it through scuppers at the low points of the planes.

Ample operable windows are located throughout the house to produce cross-ventilation and, with combined with ceiling fans, eliminate the need for air conditioning. Expanses of glass in every space provide daylighting, and solar panels on the garage roof supply most of the electrical needs of the houses.
