Perched on a south-facing hill in Aquinnah, Dune House’s location offers incredible views in all directions. The existing residence, built in the 1980’s, was all too focused on the distant views of the Atlantic to the south, turning its back on the short views of the property’s pond and dune landscape, as well as the long views of Gay Head Light to the west.
The renovation stitches the existing residence to the site with a series of new, carefully curated apertures that frame the surrounding landscape. The result is a dynamic interior that constantly reorients the occupant to the nuances of the site and the activity it holds. Large ribbons of glass and clerestory windows bring in light from above, blurring the line between inside and outside.
The new addition transforms an existing detached guest house into a large master suitewith an ocean-facing study, bedroom, and bathroom opening to a trellis-covered outdoor shower. This organization establishes privacy and solitude at the primary suite, even when the home is full of guests. The converging stepped, flat roofing forms of the new addition mimic the nesting gabled roof volumes of the existing residence, creating a cohesive language across the site.
